The Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk
19 July, 2017
Courtmacsherry RNLI in co-operation with Barryroe GAA, under the “Respect the Water” partnership, are organising the inaugural Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk along the beautiful coastline from Courtmacsherry Bay to Inchydoney Bay in West Cork on Saturday August 12th 2017. Starting and finishing in the village of Courtmacsherry this walk, one of Ireland’s only full 26.2 mile Marathon, will encompass some of the most stunning scenery on the south west coast as you walk to the turnabout point at South Ring. This wonderful walking challenge on quiet scenic roads, bar a short beach crossing at Broadstrand and overlooking the Seven Heads Peninsula is in aid of Courtmacsherry RNLI, proudly supported by Barryroe GAA.
The official start of Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk takes place at Courtmacsherry Lifeboat House at 9.30am. The half marathon, 5km and 10km walks will also start in Courtmacsherry at 9.30am. Should you wish, there will be half Marathon, 10km and 5km walks starting in South Ring at 13.30pm. The full Marathon route takes you to Broadstrand, on past Lislee Church followed by a steep climb up Cuckoo Hill. Narry’s Cross marks the top of the hill and the panorama lying before you is breathtaking. The full vista of the Seven Heads Peninsula opens up before your eyes. The Atlantic Ocean, from the Old Head of Kinsale to Dunowen, south of Clonakilty, gives you a distinct ‘edge of the world’ feel. We journey further through the brightly painted village of Butlerstown to the very popular beach of Dunworley with its sparking blue water; past Moloney’s Strand and turn left up Lehenagh Hill. As we climb we see the Galley Head Lighthouse come into view. The views from this road to Ballinglanna are truly magnificent...the Wild Atlantic Way at its best. From Ballinglanna we walk on to South Ring, overlooking the wide, golden beaches of Inchydoney Island, voted one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. From the lovely fishing village of South Ring we start the return journey to Courtmacsherry. This is a full 26.2 miles of roadway marathon walk but, as stated above, there are options for a one way half marathon or 10km/5km walks. Appropriate walking clothes, boots, sunscreen and water are highly recommended. Dogs are not allowed. Registration from 8am to 9.30am in Courtmacsherry Community Centre or for the half marathon in South Ring from 12.30 to 13.30pm.
